This brings me to the subject of this article, how to fold a suit jacket without incurring any wrinkles. I would like to stress that this technique can be used for men and women’s apparel alike. You could even fold shirts and lightweight outerwear with this method. The center piece of this fold, taught to me by my grandfather who learned it from his father, is to form the bulkiest pieces of clothing into the latest pieces. What has to be looked after is the structure of your jackets. When folding tailored clothing the most important part to avoid wrinkles is to not crease the shoulders or collar. These areas are pressed many times in a clothing factory to give you the shape needed to form to the body. That is what makes a garment fit so well, how many times it has been pressed during it’s creation.

The question being now is how do you fold a suit jacket to avoid wrinkles and not fold over the collar and shoulder area? Follow me here as it might get a little tricky explaining this, but in actuality it is not difficult to do and takes only a few seconds. You don’t need another person or a table to lay the jacket onto.

Take each hand and extend your fingers.

1-Put each hand inside the shoulders of your jackets with the opening of the jacket facing you. Now your hands should be placed under what is called the collar points of the jacket.

2-Put your two hands, palms together with them inside the shoulder area of the jacket.

3-Now with the right hand grab onto the left shoulder of the jacket from the inside and remove your left hand. You should now be holding the jacket with your right hand and your left hand is now free.

4-Use your left hand to lift up the collar and the lapels so they are now facing outward.

5-Using your left hand for support hold onto the top of the collar that is now up and with your right hand pull both shoulders to the right side as you twist with the collar in your left turning the shoulder pads inside each other.

6-With both hands, line up the lapels so the notch or peak line up.

7-Holding the collar again for support with the collar up and lapels together and using your right hand, push the shoulders back through to the other side. Now the jacket should be in half vertically and the shoulders still are in their rounded pressed form only inside each other.

8-For the last step, fold the jacket in half horizontally over your arm and there you have it. You just learned how to fold a suit jacket and pack it without wrinkles.

The jacket is now completely flat. The shoulders are not creased or crushed. The collar will keep it’s shape. You can now pack jackets on top of each other this way in your luggage by alternating where the shoulders lay making sure you are profiting from the best use of your luggage space.

Let’s pause and reflect on what we have.

In some parts of the world we have GPS controlled drones and in the rest, we have around 3.6 billion people, who do not have regular access to the internet. These are the people who are terminally failing to get the benefit of the internet as an economic engine.

Digital divide is the gap in availability and access to information and communication technology (ICT) among individuals and communities. Numerically, this gap, i.e. people with no/limited access to computer or the internet, is three times the Indian population. The idea of digital revolution cannot be achieved when 50% of the world population is excluded. In other words, this population can’t compete on an equal footing in the labour market. The ‘optimistic path’ surmised by UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 9 and Agenda 2030 also envision avant-garde industrial revolution dubbed Industry 4.0. As this industrial breakthrough is heavily dependent on the adoption of technological innovation, the population disconnected from this technological grid will be less informed and under-represented in the capital and labour market.

The ability to access computers and the internet depends on many interwoven factors i.e., social, and economic dimensions. Nonetheless, the digital split can easily be bridged if these factors are broken down into specific action plans. Aside from these obvious barriers, the following would help narrow the gap:

Develop physical infrastructure: The Mason Analysis shows that the lack of proper infrastructure conducive to internet connection is more prevalent in the developing countries, especially in Africa. In this regard, key inputs such as development of terrestrial connectivity between the submarine cables, development of training centres and data module are perquisite to overcome the induction barriers of digital divide.

Promote investment and cooperation: The cardinal element to independent development of physical infrastructure is the liberalization of Public-Private Partnership (PPP) investment. Such a measure would boost investor confidence and could maximize the effectiveness of new investments conducive to financial and infrastructural resources. At this stage, policy remedy is required to lower licensing cost and high taxes on equipment and services. At the same time, integration of internet into the service delivery of government agencies and usage of communications infrastructure should also be highly prioritized.

Develop customized content: Developing physical infrastructure and providing training modules are not enough if local demand is not met. Today is Article number Ten of our series of The Top 10 Mistakes in Advertising and How To Avoid Them.

I appreciate very much that you spent these first nine articles with me.

Ideally they have imparted some experience, knowledge, help for you, to avoid or eliminate some of the advertising and marketing and media hiccups that too many advertisers have had to deal with.

This series I capped at 10. That’s not to say there’s not a host more of them. I’m sure everyone can append to the list or maybe change the order as they see fit and I fully respect that.

But these are the ones that have been the most prominent in my career across multiple agencies, clients, industries and budgets of all sizes

My hope is that they are some guideposts for you as to how to navigate your future activity.

So by way of quick review before we get to our series ender, a quick summary

Number one was a failure to test and to measure your ad and

Number two was not taking the time for ad scheduling.

Number three was failing to research who your target group really is

Number four was changing the look too frequently

Number five – remember I suggested that you’ve gotta dance with who you’ve brought. You take care of your existing clients

Number six was to please do the due diligence and don’t just open your wallet to any ad sales rep

Number seven was spreading yourself too thin and not doing a good job on any one media to start with

Number eight was coming into the campaign with unrealistic expectations of what your ad campaign can do to transform your business overnight

Number nine was giving up on your campaign too soon

Today for Number Ten and this one strikes at the heart of creative and that’s quite simply, Running Lousy Ads.

You’ve seen them, you can probably rhyme two or three off the top of your head just like that.

There is no way to put it delicately but most advertising fails, as high as 90% by some reports, but most advertising fails.

Huh? Ninety percent! Yes, and why you ask?

Well because they don’t excite and engage the reader.

They don’t pique curiosity. They don’t tell the reader to pay attention.

They blend into the background and become invisible.

They are too boring.

Like I said there’s not a way to put this delicately.

But if your message isn’t that engaging to pull someone’s attention, how in the world are you going to get them down to the bottom of the ad when you can’t even get their interest at the top of the ad.

I mentioned Mr. John Caples earlier in this series. He was a prolific ad tester. He was also a very good ad writer and arguably his most famous was an ad he wrote for the US School of Music correspondence where the headline read: … They laughed when I sat down to play the piano but when I started to play…

Then he went through some wonderful storytelling. That headline captivated people through the entire ad and directed them to the clip out coupon to order some music lessons by mail.

It was an unqualified success and it was repeated for decades because it continued to pique the readers’ curiosity.

Your headline makes or breaks your ad and many a seasoned copywriter will tell you just how important those few words are to a getting the reader into the rest of the story.

It can pique curiosity.

It can be Here’s How.

It can be This is Why.

It can be Who Else Wants whatever,

but more than anything else your headline has to draw attention away from everything else that that person is going through at that time and say…

… you really need to read this and you need to see what it is I have to say nothing else is as important as these 95 seconds it’ll take you to read my ad…

That’s what you have to do. To fix this dear readers, well quite honestly you simply have to create better ads.

It all starts with the words. Those 26 letters of the alphabet are your key to sales. Whether you write it for yourself or you have an agency or a professional do it for you, you want ads that are informative, that get the prospect eager to have more of this. Whatever your this happens to be.

To get them into the ads you need to create a great headline.

And a great headline is responsible for upwards of 80% of the success of the ad. It has to stop you and pull you in. It has to have arresting power. You want to sell them don’t you?

You need to get their attention, and if you want to get their attention, stop them with a headline that says… you have to read this now.

In fact, the more diversity there is among the participants, in terms of personality type, age, background, knowledge, skills, and experience, the wider the range of insights and innovative ideas the group will be able to generate – a far greater range than any one person alone can typically produce alone.
  2. Cross-pollination and rapid development of ideas – Kicking around and exploring lots of different possi­bilities with others can stimulate the spontaneous cross-pollination of ideas. In other words, one person’s idea can quickly spark a dozen or more new and different associa­tions from the group. We call that phenomenon the “pop­corning” of ideas. The opportunity to build on one another’s ideas is a key benefit of the group problem-solving process – be­cause often one person may come up with one part of a solution, while others provide the missing pieces.
  3. “Group Genius” – The phenomenon known as group genius occurs when a group of people becomes single-mindedly focused in its creative problem-solving activity. All sense of time, place, and self-consciousness or ego disappears. Everyone feels highly alert, engaged, and on top of their games. Everything flows. It’s under these conditions that a unified sense of effortless collaboration emerges. The group begins to function as a single, collective mind that intuitively knows the best ways to build upon, amplify, or refine one an­other’s ideas.
  4. Greater productivity: a wider range of new and dif­ferent ideas – When a group is able to work at maximum effectiveness, under the guidance of a skilled brainstorming leader, they’re capable of accomplishing a great deal in a relatively short amount of time. Groups can easily generate dozens, if not a hundred or more ideas in a single, highly productive brainstorming session.

As you can see, there are a lot of advantages to gener­ating ideas as part of a group… greater diversity in thinking, knowledge and experience; enhanced productivity in less time; and perhaps most important, the ability to generate a wider range of different types of ideas than one can when working solo.

Participating in a group brainstorming session can be a highly enjoyable and rewarding experience, when conducted properly. The more group sessions you participate in, the more you’ll appreci­ate the feeling of accomplishment that comes from solving challenges through creative collaboration.
